Released as a single in November 1984, it reached No. 1 in the UK in March 1985, taking 17 weeks to get at that place. It was the beginning United kingdom number-one striking by the Stock Aitken Waterman production trio.[six] On the U.Due south. Billboard Hot 100, information technology peaked at No. eleven on 17 August of that twelvemonth.[vii] In 2003, Q ranked the song at number 981 in their list of the "1001 Best Songs Ever", Blender listed information technology at number 289 on its ranking of "Greatest Songs Since You Were Built-in" in 2005 and in 2015, it was voted past the British public as the nation's 17th favourite 1980s number-one in a poll for ITV.

The accompanying music video, which features a disco brawl, waving gold flags and an evocation of the six-armed Vishnu, was directed by Vaughan Arnell and Anthea Benton.

Background and composition [edit]

Dead or Alive's vocalist Pete Burns stated in his autobiography that he equanimous "Yous Spin Me Circular" by using two existing songs as inspiration for creating something new:

How did I write "Spin Me"? I listened to Luther Vandross's 'I Wanted Your Dear'. It's non the aforementioned chord structure, but and so that'southward the manner I brand music – I hear something and I sing another tune over it. I didn't sit and study the Luther Vandross album – I heard the vocal and it locked. [...] I'thou trying to structure the music and I know what I want. [...] Information technology's like do this, exercise this, do this - and all of a sudden it hits. I don't want to do Luther Vandross's vocal, but I can yet sing the aforementioned pattern over information technology. And there was some other record, past Little Nell, called "See You 'Round Like A Record". [...] So I had those ii, Van Dross [sic] and Piddling Nell and – bingo! – done deal.

Pete Burns, Freak Unique (2007)

Desiring to move on from the sound of the ring'south start album, Sophisticated Boom Blast, Pete Burns wanted "Y'all Spin Me Round" to be produced by the and so little-known production team Stock Aitken Waterman, in the Hi-NRG fashion of their 1984 Uk hits "You Think You're a Man" by Divine, and "Whatever I Practise (Wherever I Go)" by Hazell Dean.[half-dozen]

Burns claimed the vocal was "completed" by the fourth dimension the producers were then chosen to work on information technology, stating that "the record companies don't trust a ring to go into the studio without a producer".[8] According to Burns, the record company was unenthusiastic well-nigh "You Spin Me Round" to such an extent that Burns had to take out a £2,500 loan to tape it. Later information technology was recorded, he recalled, "the record company said information technology was awful" and the band had to fund production of the vocal's video themselves.[ix]

Interviewed for BBC Radio 4'due south The Reunion: The Hitting Factory, in April 2015, Burns said that a confrontational attitude between the producers and band led to "quite a bad vibe" during production and "a time of intense friction".[ten] Engineer Phil Harding, who mixed the rails, said tensions were running so high between the band members and producers Mike Stock and Matt Aitken during mixing, that it almost escalated to violence.[6] Stock has disputed the seriousness of studio tensions, alleging that Burns, Harding and Pete Waterman take all "exaggerated" what happened in their recounting of events.[11]

"You Spin Me Round (Like a Tape)" is written in the key of F♯ small[12]
